The Philippine Embassy in Muscat is pleased to inform the Filipino community about the official participation of the Philippines in the 56th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale in Venice, Italy on 09 May to 22 November 2015.

After 50 years since the country’s first and last official participation in the 32nd International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale 1964, the exhibition of the Philippine Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2015 aims to strengthen the role of the Philippines in the international community as a nation of and destination for contemporary art.

Established in 1895 and taking place every other year, the Venice Biennale is one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the world, the Olympics of contemporary art that exhibits global trends and engages in critical discourse. For the past century, it has become the breeding ground for world-renowned artists and has played a pivotal role in shaping the canon of Art History, validating avant-garde movements such as Pop Art by awarding Robert Rauschenberg the Grand Prize in 1964.

The Philippine Pavilion exhibition in Venice Biennale 2015 will be entitled as “Heterot(r)opic”, which will revolve around the concept of the Philippines as a tropical heterotopia, a real space of crises where utopia – the myth of civilization and the project of progress – is simultaneously represented, negotiated, and/or subverted. This will feature the works of our renowned artists namely Manuel Conde, Carlos Francisco, Manny Montelibano and Jose Tence Ruiz. The exhibition will be curated by international contemporary art historian Pearlie Rose S. Baluyut, Ph. D.
