The ASEAN Committee in Muscat (ACM) held the ASEAN Friendship Golf Tournament 2023 at the Ghala Golf Club on 18 February 2023. The event - the last of its kind being in 2015 - brought together around 50 golfers from ASEAN nations, the Oman Golf Association (OGA), and the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI). His Excellency Shaiful Anuar Mohammad, Ambassador of Malaysia and the current Chair of the ACM, welcomed His Excellency Azzan bin Qassim Al Busaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage of Oman, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest of Honor. The Undersecretary was joined by His Highness Ambassador Nazar Al Said of the Foreign Ministry; His Highness Sayyid Azzan Qais Al Said; the Foreign Ministry’s Head of the ASEAN Department His Excellency Sheikh Abdulaziz Mohammed al Hosni; and Mr. Mundhir al Barwani, the Chairman of the OGA. The Philippine golfers were headed by Mr. Jamel U. Panolong as Captain, with Labor Attaché Gregorio T. Abalos Jr., Assistance-to-Nationals Officer Ebrahim Zailon, Mr. William Acebedo, Mr. Enrico Episcope, Mr. Bondy Rivero, Mr. Rovien Steve Macapia, Mr. Bonifacio Berendes, Ms. Jameela Daud, and Ms. Venus Mangadlao. Oman brought home the team award. In second place was the Philippines with members Mr. Panolong, Mr. Zailon, Mr. Acebedo, and Mr. Episcope; and in third was the Singapore team made up of Singaporeans and the Philippines’ Labor Attaché Abalos. The winning team’s mega-trophy will be kept at the Ghala Golf Club for future ASEAN Friendship Tournaments. The individual winners were Mr. Elias Tang (Singapore), Mr. Mohsin al Kindy (first runner-up, Oman), and Mr. Jamel U. Panolong (second runner-up, Philippines). The Women’s Champion was Ms. Jameela Daud (Philippines). Mr. Faisal Al Adawi (Oman) received the Nearest the Pin award while Mr. Gurmesh Singh (Malaysia) got the Second Best Shot on 18 Holes. Her Excellency Imelda M. Panolong, Ambassador of the Philippines, closed the program as the ACM’s Vice-Chair. She thanked the guests, participants, the Ghala Golf Club, and the ACM Working Group (composed of the deputies of the ASEAN missions and their assistants) for making the event a truly successful one. With lucky draw prizes, too, it was a day full of fun for the participants, once again elevating the image of ASEAN as a significant regional bloc, and building camaraderie amongst the ASEAN nationals in Oman and Omanis.
